Letter to Cardiff

‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches’

(Revelation 3:22)

What might Jesus be saying, church of Caerdydd?

Might it sound something like this?

The words of Him upon whose shoulders the government rests; the One who became obedient to death, and has been highly exalted by the Father. The words of the Servant King …

I know you dwell in the capital city, saints of the Taff. Yours is the city of Principality & Senedd, of Castle & Cathedral. In you the culture of Cymru is celebrated and cultivated; from you the governance of Cymru is derived and delivered to the far corners of the land.

I desire greatness for you, Caerdydd. But not a greatness as the world measures it.

Mine is not a greatness of cultural influence and political power, but of kingdom influence -servanthood – and kingdom power – prayer. I am walking among you to bring these precious treasures of My kingdom to life in your churches and in your streets. I come to you afresh, My saints, as the Servant King.

Come see the dazzling joy in My eyes as I wash the feet of the poor in Queen Street. Come see Me march in generous triumph through communities of My people among the least – from Tremorfa to Ely, from Llanedeyrn to Llanrumney. Come see Me mobilise new mission partnerships not around human strategy but around friendship and love. Come see the oil dripping from My beard as I watch My churches unite in prayer.

Come see the leaders arising to serve My church who care nothing for name and fame, but My glory alone.

You are first in Wales in many ways, Caerdydd. So here is My invitation: become the last, the youngest, the servant of all. For such is the shape of My greatness. And such is the longing of My heart for you.

Join Me, My bride, as I serve this city. Join Me as I set up My kingdom not of this world – My kingdom of sacrifice, servanthood, generosity and travailing prayer – amongst and within the kingdoms of this world. And join Me as I build an engine room of prayer in the church in this city to bring blessing to the nation. What I have begun to do brings delight to My eyes. Join Me, saints; there is much still to do. I want to do it with you.

Arise and become My capital Caerdydd. Become the servant city. From you I will send and bless, and as I do I will prove true the words of My sacred promise, ‘no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first’ (Mark 10:29-31).
