Seven Cities Poems

Spoken word prophetic prayer over Cardiff, Newport and Swansea

By Cath and Dan Woolridge

September 2026

Cardiff — Capital C

Capitol city

The land of Bassey, the Bay & the coal exchange.

Singing hymns of pure heart, watching Barry John & Gareth Edwards play like Gods.

Yet there’s only one worthy of such a title.

Cardiff — you host thousands of souls who sing hymns of old

to the ancient of days, yet many have forgotten who they’re singing about & who they’re singing to.

Their praise has been short-circuited, yet may you remind them of the holy one, full of

grace & truth.

_________

Cardiff — Capital C

Capitol city

Your true capitol isn’t in buildings of legislation but building on the Lord

Cornerstone, Capital C of Christ

Jesus, see those who feel ghosted.

Draw near to the vulnerable.

Be companions to the lonely.

Feed those in poverty.

House the homeless spiritually and physically.

See those searching for hope.

_______

Cardiff — Capital C

Capitol city

Swap inequality for justice.

Bring Provision where there’s lack.

healing where there’s heartbreak.

and give courage to the captains who lead this city.

________

Cardiff — Capital C

Capitol city

Steer the Senedd to put you back in the drivers seat.

Give wisdom to those who govern

And may Cardiff be known

not just for Bassey or Barry John

Or for what it achieves,

but for how it cares.

A city where people belong.

where the vulnerable are protected.

Where hope can blossom.

May this city lift its eyes beyond itself

and discover the Christ of the capital C

Newport

Newport – the city at the crossing

A city of finesse & fun

From chipping, putting and driving up, to Celtic Manor’s Ryder Cup

To skateboard ramps and Dirty Sanchez, Pritchard pranks

from the ICC to the GLC

from the Big Pitt to the Bryn Glass,

(bottle neck, where queuing is rarely optional)

_______

Newport – the city at the crossing

your true crossing is knowing the God who makes a way to the greatest

crossing-over from death to life, in Christ

________

Jesus, be our Rock of Refuge.

Breathe life into neglected neighbourhoods.

Be a home for those from broken homes

Reconcile families.

Build community.

Break cycles of poverty.

_______

Shine your light into night life

And may your bride shine bright

So that all see, church light up the city

With an unrelenting passion to showcase the Saviour’s grace

and be a beacon of hope to the community.

________

Newport

The city of the crossing,

welcoming in fellow travellers

to the land of our Fathers,

and welcoming those once living in exile,

home.

_______

Let regeneration be more than buildings but bodies

That recognise the greatest somebody who became a nobody

To change their eternal trajectory

_______

Newport, you stand at a crossing.

May you choose the road of justice, mercy and humility

And may you be bearers of hope, to a hurting people.

_______

Newport

Do not forget your ancient routes and Roman roots

where Caerleon amphitheatre once staged combats,

May you suit-up in the armour of Christ

_______

May you remember — while all roads

may lead to Rome, the only road

worth travelling on leads to Christ.

________

Our Severn bridge to the home of our Father.

________

Newport – the city at the crossing

your true crossing is knowing the God who makes a way to the greatest

crossing-over from death to life, in Christ

Swansea

you are a city by the sea —

shaped by waves and horizons.

_______

The land of the Mumbles,

of Bonnie’s heart totally eclipsed by Joe’s ice cream.

You are a city steeped in history & anthracite coal exporting identity.

May you dock your soul in the harbour of His holiness,

anchored in the hope of His transformative grace

_______

Swansea, city by the sea —

there is a beauty

deeper than what the eye can see.

For your true beauty is knowing the God who Sees you.

…

Swansea

The landscape may have changed since the good old days,

but put your hope in the unchanging One.

Be inspired by the saints of yesteryear,

of the courageous faith of the great witnesses that went before us,

but do not remain there.

_______

Hold fast for the new thing God is doing in these moments, in your city, in your generation. For the baton has been passed, so run the race.

________

May you be swept up in wonder down by the Gower

— Three Cliffs, Oxwich, Worms Head —

yet may it stir your soul to marvel at the Painter of this glorious canvas.

________

Swansea, city by the sea,

May you know your true beauty is knowing the God who sees you.

_________

The Alpha & Omega,

beginning & end, Word became flesh.

May we excavate & cultivate the richness of revival,

baked into the soil, left by our forefathers that went before us.

_________

May our passion for Christ be too much to contain on these southwest shores,

That we cannot but retrace the voyages of our forefathers,

And where they brought coal,

we come with a message that burns for the consuming fire himself.

________

So Lord, Rock and Rescuer here our prayer…

Where brokenness is the arc of the story, bring your good news plot twist.

Where poverty is short of change, bring the life giving riches, of your sustaining daily bread.

Where loneliness eats alone, bring community around the table.

Where hopelessness reigns, may hope hail new horizons.

________

Swansea, city by the sea,

May you know your true beauty is knowing the God who sees you.
